Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in Africa, and remnants of its humble beginnings more than a thousand years ago can still be found in the old city. Even better, this city on the Nile River is the gateway to ancient Egypt, including the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Golden or Boy King, otherwise known as King Tutankhamun.
The area where Cairo is located has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years. Nine different cities, including Memphis and Babylon, have occupied the site, but the city has been known as Cairo since the 10th century. The layout of the central part of the city remains much in its original form, with some buildings dating back to the medieval period.
The city has more than 600 Islamic monuments located through its environs. Many of these mosques and monuments date back to medieval times. A visit to the Al-Azhar Mosque is a must; the mosque dates back to 970. Today, more than 90 percent of the city’s residents adhere to the Islamic faith.
A visitor’s initial impression may be that chaos rules, that there is no system in place to make it easy for newcomers to navigate. Travelers willing to learn a few words in Arabic will soon find this apparent chaos is all part of the city’s charm.
It may seem disorganized, but one of the top places to shop in Cairo is the Khan el-Khalili. Dating back to the 14th century, this souk or market is THE place to shop in Egypt for souvenirs such as Islamic clothes, items made of gold and silver, water pipes and scarves. As is common in this type of markets, vendors ask outrageous prices of foreign shoppers, so travelers must bargain hard to end up with a fair price.
To get a better feel for Egyptian history, a visit to the Egypt Museum, founded in 1835, is a must. Here you can see the precious treasures found in the tomb of King Tut, jewelry, sculptures, and items relating to the afterlife, such as sarcophagi, which early Egyptians strongly believed in.
When Cairo’s hustle and bustle gets to you, consider a day tour to the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx or to Memphis, a nearby city that was the first capital of Old Egypt.
